Do you have more than one tank?
Do you want to save money in the fish keeping hobby. or just spoil your fish with better food and tank decor?
Well I have learned that there is a way to save money with things that are quite handy for the freshwater aquarium.
One big thing is filter floss. you know the white fluffy stuff or the white pouch you put in your whisper.
I have one word. Acrylic Pillow Stuffing. Ok more than one word. If you go to the material section of a store more than likely they will sell Acrylic pillow stuffing for people who make their own pillows, or quilt batting. As long as there is no chemicals added to resist mold or anything added to it, you can use it for your filters (minus canister trust me I had a blocking experience). Pillow floss (comes in a bag) or quilt batting (comes in sheets)can replace the costly filter floss or pockets you buy from pet stores.
Another thing is salt. People buy "aquarium salt" to treat their fishtanks. All you really need is non ionized salt, you can use pickle salt, or kosher salt and get this at Blain's Farm and Fleet I bought 20 pounds of cattle salt for $3.00. I am set with salt for a long time, I use it to hatch my brine shrimp and to salt tanks.
Between the pillow fluff 2.00 - 4.00 and the salt 3.00 I did some saving! I have been doing this for years and have not had any ill effects.
So now you have some more money to buy your fish some treats! But guess what, you can save a lot of dough when buying great quility food. It is called bulk buying, and yes you can bulk buy fish food and it will last. Whats better is that you have a choice, by a brand name or not.
If you looked in the stores mere ounces of fish flake costs some money.
Lets take for example Tetramin's Tropical fish flake at the smallest amount sold:
TetraMin Flakes 2.20 oz $4.89
That is almost 5.00 for only a few ounces!
How about a Half of a pound for less say...
Tropical Fish Flake 1/2 LB $3.25.
Now lets take a look at bottom feeder's foods:
Algae Wafers (Algae eaters) 2.89 oz $3.99
Sinking Wafers (Corys and Cats) 3.88 oz $4.99
How about this instead?
SPIRULINA WAFERS 1/2 LB $4.40
BRINE SHRIMP STICKS 1/2 LB $4.50
TROPICAL STICKS: 1/2 LB $4.50
EARTHWORM STICKS: 1/2 LB $4.50
Look at the price difference. I have used foods like this for years and actually get sticker shock when I go to a pet store and see the prices!
What is great about these foods is you can taylor what you need for your fish! Oh there is so many more foods, brand name in bulk, baby fish food in bulk and much much more.
You can save a lot by going to a 3rd party salesman like here. My fish club buys food by 100 pounds and the members pay these prizes for the foods. I was lucky I started buying from Ken's years before I joined the club. I have not found any better prices since.
